FEATURE STAIR AND BALUSTRADE
This staircase was developed by ACME Architects for their Shoreditch office. The structural concept was developed by Martin Ocampo whilst at AKTII. The staircase is constructed using an engineered laminated timber - Baubuche. The concept was for a modular self-build system that could be stacked together by the builder. As each tread twists around, it is anchored against the rear wall which forms a geometric grid pattern from below.
The ACME office is a work-in-progress, and ACME asked Public House to develop a feature balustrade for the staircase (which previously only functioned as an “installation”!). The balustrade was designed as an absolute minimum intervention to resist the design code loads. Steel (reinforcement) bars are anchored into the concrete floor and cantilever, with additional stiffness provided by the return and anchoring into the side walls.
