BENCH FOR THE ROYAL ACADEMY, LONDON

In collaboration with Apparata architects, we designed a reading bench for an exhibition on swiss architects at the Royal Academy in London.

The design intent was for a modular, demountable, playful and awkward structure.
Initial concepts were for a timber structure using the legs and seat areas to tie the pieces of timber that otherwise appear to fall apart.

We then developed an aluminium tube option and took this forward. Again, legs that pass through the individual tubes tie these together whilst appearing to want to fall apart. Two irregular legs at the end are provided just in case it tips, and add some awkwardness, irregularity and playfulness to the bench.
