Public House completed the Stage 4 Detail Design for a large public concert venue for a park in Milan city centre. A full concrete structure, the design is a 20m spanning concrete arch shell roof with a cantilever section towards the front.
Although we inherited a full concrete structural scheme, Public House have extensive expertise in sustainable design with the material: including optimising the structure to reduce quantities and weights and developing precise concrete mixes to minimise or even eliminate cement content
As a result, we were able to reduce embodied carbon by 37% as part of our detail design work. This was done through:
- Optimisation of the structural form of the shell roof to improve the arch behaviour and reduce bending in the roof shell.
- This permitted a 30% reduction of thickness of the roof shell, as well as the thickness of the supporting walls
- Foundation optimisation by analysing settlement behaviour of the structure and designing pad foundations that responded to the expected ground settlement behaviour
- Reduction in concrete strength and cement content of the specified concrete mix. Public House specified concrete mixes for each element of the structure to minimise cement content and increase the amount of replacement products where possible.
