CLERKENWELL HISTORIC HOUSES
Refurbishment of two terrace houses in Clerkenwell. The houses along this terrace are all listed due to their special architectural significance. Public House developed a number of careful structural interventions for the proposed architectural changes - we ensured that these interventions were sensitive to the historic fabric of the building, and sought to retain the fabric everywhere possible.
The houses were also subsiding heavily towards the rear! Public House engaged with specialist ground and geotechnical experts to carry out site investigations and develop proposals to strengthen the foundations and the ground below the buildings. Traditional and screw pile underpinning were explored. Site investigations revealed poor made ground conditions to significant depth, and a recent Thames Water leak nearby. As a result, a faster and more cost-effective route was chosen to carry out soil injection below the foundations to increase the bearing capacity and reduce the settlement.
